What do we owe after all?
What do we owe after all?
They told us to pay. However, nobody told us what do we owe and to whom. The Greek public dept (on which so much has been said over the last months) remains the unknown “X” even for the “experts” of the Ministry of Finance. What is today the true value of Greek bonds that change hands every day? Which part of the debt is owned by foreign and which by domestic lenders? And most importantly, which part of this debt is odious, in which case we do not have any special obligation to pay?
Intervening in this debate Professor in economics Costas Lapavitsas (School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London) proposes a revolutionary (as well as implicit) solution. Let the citizenry be aware of the actual characteristics of the debt and take the political decisions necessary to resolve the problem.
At this point, the examples of Argentina (did not bother to find out the details of the debt) and Ecuador (assigned groups of foreign auditors the dept’s mapping) are valuable for the next steps. The transparency which is asked by the Greek professor in his writings is supposedly mainstream media’s and politician’s quest as well; who they keep asking us for months to whip ourselves and pay to the last cent the money we spent (with them). Hic Rhodus, Hic saltus! (literally translated: “Rhodes is here, here is where you jump!”; free translation: “Let’s do it right here, right now if you dare!”). Tell us what do we owe and to whom and let us decide hat we should do about it.
