Le Monde correspondent in London, Marc Roche points out that new ECB head Mario Draghi was European vice president of Goldman Sachs from 2002-2005, while new Italian prime minister, Mario Monti, has been employed by the bank as international advisor since 2005. Draghi was responsible for sovereigns, and thus for fishy deals such as the infamous currency swap that helped sweep greek debt under the carpet and allowed Greece into the eurozone. Draghi denies any connection to that deal, since he was hired a few months after the deal was concluded. At the Greek end of the deal was none other than Lukas Papademos, head of the Bank of Greece in 1994-2002.
