One passenger, speaking to newsit.gr, confirmed that no clear information or guidance was provided by the train managers, and that travellers took matters into their own hands by manually opening the doors and exiting the train. Initial reports suggest that the train had come to a stop when passengers noticed the flames. In response, they pulled the emergency lever, opened the doors, and evacuated the train on their own.

Leonidas Georgopoulos, president of the ISAP workers’ union, explained to the same media outlet that once the train driver spotted the flames, he promptly ordered the electricity supply to the lines to be cut off for safety.

SYRIZA MP Giorgos Karameros commented on the incident via X (formerly Twitter), criticising the government’s handling of public transportation. He tweeted: “The Mitsotakis government has destroyed transport. Another serious train incident. Fire in an ISAP wagon on Line 1 between Irini and Neratziotissa. Commuters run in panic to get away between power lines.”
