On May 30, 2024, EODY’s Department of Foodborne and Waterborne Diseases was notified by the Velestino Health Center of a surge in gastroenteritis cases among residents of these regions. As of June 1, 2024, more than 40 cases have been documented, affecting individuals of all ages and genders, with the onset of symptoms dating back to May 27, 2024. Seven children were hospitalised in the pediatric clinic, and an elderly person with underlying health conditions is in the ICU at Volos General Hospital.
In response, the Department of Health Control and Environmental Hygiene (TYEPY) of Magnesia visited the affected areas on May 31, 2024, to inspect the water supply network. Water samples were collected from various points in the network and sent to the Thessaly Public Health Laboratory for analysis.
Preliminary results indicate a possible microbiological contamination, potentially linked to ongoing works in the water supply network. Further laboratory testing is underway to confirm these findings. Meanwhile, one stool sample from a patient treated at the Velestino Health Center tested positive for Salmonella. Additional clinical sample testing is ongoing at Volos General Hospital.
EODY and the Thessaly Public Health Laboratory are collaborating with the Directorate of Public Health and Social Care and TYEPY of Magnesia to investigate the outbreak. On May 31, 2024, the Municipality of Rigas Feraios was informed of the situation, and the Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company (DEYA) has since issued a notice advising residents against using tap water for consumption. An EODY team is to visit the area on June 3, 2024, to further support the epidemiological and laboratory investigation.
EODY urges the public to adhere strictly to personal hygiene measures to prevent secondary transmission of the disease. DEYA has initiated measures to sanitise the water supply network. The investigation is ongoing.
