The intervention follows a complaint by former MEP Sophie in ‘t Veld, who accused von der Leyen of breaching EU treaties by accepting the hospitality of a member state’s leader, a claim the European Commission has denied. In ‘t Veld argued that it is improbable the Commission would not have any documentation related to the president’s visit, given the significance of such interactions between high-level officials.
EU Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly has now stepped in, requesting public access to all relevant documents. On 2 August, O’Reilly sent a letter to Sophie in ‘t Veld, informing her that the Commission had claimed it possessed no documents regarding the visit. This led to an initial finding by the Ombudsman, who has since issued a more stringent request for the Commission to “search again” for the records.
