The Minister noted that daily electricity consumption has fallen to around 5.5 gigawatt hours, down from 7.5-10.5 gigawatt hours during the summer months. However, he cautioned that the energy crisis in the region remains severe, partly due to Ukraine’s high energy consumption from neighbouring countries, which has kept demand elevated. Skylakakis suggested that a European intervention might be necessary to address this issue, though national measures could also be implemented if the crisis persists.

Skylakakis highlighted Greece’s role as a key player in the regional energy system, noting that the country lacks interconnections with other European nations. He pointed out that the insufficient interconnectivity between Eastern and Western Europe exacerbates the crisis, citing Cyprus as an example where electricity prices are double those in Greece due to its isolation from the European grid.

The Minister’s announcement comes as electricity providers in Greece reveal their prices for September. The Public Power Corporation (DEI) has set its “green” tariff for consumption up to 500 kilowatt-hours at 15.94 cents per kilowatt-hour, a slight decrease from August’s 16.391 cents. For consumption over 500 kilowatt-hours, the rate is 17.14 cents, up from 16.955 cents in August.
