Speaking on SKAI television on Tuesday, 20 August, Plevris argued that the derogatory term has become increasingly prevalent and that police officers deserve stronger legal protection. “The use of the term ‘cop’ has got out of hand,” Plevris stated. “With the reopening of Parliament, I will take the initiative, alongside other MPs from New Democracy and potentially other parties, to ensure that the use of this term automatically triggers a criminal offence, without the need for a formal complaint.”

Plevris emphasised that police officers, who he said are simply doing their jobs, must be shielded from verbal abuse by individuals with anti-authoritarian or anarchist views. “Police officers need to be protected from any complex, from any type of anarchist or anyone else who wants to take out their issues on the police,” he added.
