Netanyahu claimed that “Israel, Greece and Cyprus are real democracies that have suffered slavery and deprivation,” adding that the three states cooperate closely on defence “because the enemy exists.”
Mitsotakis described the trilateral alliance as a “pillar of responsibility, stability and common interests,” highlighting expanded security and strategic cooperation. He also referred to Greece’s readiness to assist in Gaza’s reconstruction and the protection of civilians, despite the fact that holding such a summit in Israel signals political support for the Netanyahu government, which is responsible for the continuing devastation of the Palestinian enclave.
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides stressed the importance of the 3+1 energy scheme involving the United States, while all three leaders agreed to deepen cooperation on defence, energy and regional security.
The summit unfolded as the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warned that in Gaza “more than 100,000 children and 37,000 pregnant and lactating women are projected to continue to suffer from acute malnutrition until April next year.”
Earlier in the day, Mitsotakis met Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah. He reaffirmed Greece’s support for the Palestinian Authority as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people and expressed Greece’s willingness to assist with Gaza’s reconstruction. He also referred to the need for reforms within the Palestinian Authority to strengthen its capacity and rebuild trust.
