In a statement, the party said that dozens of air strikes had targeted Iran following what it described as alleged negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear programme. It argued that diplomacy, international law and peaceful coexistence were once again being undermined.

According to Mera25, the escalation forms part of a broader strategy by the United States and Israel to impose political dominance over a region rich in energy resources and located at a key crossroads of global trade.

The party also linked the developments to the ongoing war in Gaza, stating that the ‘crime of genocide of the Palestinians’ is being followed by attempts to expand US influence in the wider region.

Mera25 said the peoples of the Middle East would not accept domination by what it described as a system focused on profit extraction and political control. It also accused Western governments of granting Israel impunity while it carries out military attacks against neighbouring countries.

Referring to Greece, the party criticised the government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for allowing US and NATO military infrastructure in the country to be used for operations in the region.

‘The Greek people stand on the side of diplomacy, peace and cooperation between peoples. They have nothing to gain from the involvement of the Mitsotakis government in the most dangerous plans of the US, NATO and Israel, nothing to gain from the concession of Souda (the naval base in Crete used by the United States and NATO), Alexandroupolis and all the other military bases in the country to the murderers of peoples and international legitimacy,’ the statement said.

The party called for Greece not to become involved in military operations and demanded the immediate closure of the Souda base.

It also announced a protest gathering outside the US embassy in Athens, scheduled for Sunday at 11am in Parko Eleftherias, under the slogans ‘Hands off Iran’, ‘No involvement of Greece in military operations’ and ‘Free Palestine’.
