Speaking to Mega television, Gara described the ongoing military intervention as illegal, stressing that it violates fundamental principles of international law. She said Greek foreign policy should be firmly grounded in the defence of international rules.

At the same time, she condemned the situation in Iran, referring to what she described as an oppressive theocratic regime. She added that SYRIZA has repeatedly called on the government to take initiatives supporting democracy and modernisation in countries governed by such regimes.

Gara also rejected the concept of a ‘preventive war’, arguing that military conflicts primarily affect civilians, including children, workers and soldiers. For this reason, she said Greece must not become involved in the conflict and called for NATO bases located on Greek territory not to be used for military operations.

Instead, she argued, the country should actively contribute to European initiatives aimed at de-escalation and peace.

Referring to defence policy, Gara said Greece’s defence capabilities have historically remained strong and should not become a field of petty political confrontation. She noted that successive governments have prioritised strengthening defence and emphasised the need for the continued modernisation of military equipment and the reinforcement of the armed forces’ human resources.

She also stressed that Greece must respect its international and bilateral obligations, citing as an example the military cooperation agreement with Bulgaria, which was ratified by parliament in 2010 and includes joint military exercises.

Finally, she referred to challenges at the country’s borders, particularly in Evros, noting the need for initiatives on water management and better coordination in addressing migration flows, which she said have already increased in recent days.
