The production manager’s defence statement over the fatal explosion at the Violanta biscuit factory was completed today, 27 April 2026.
According to ERT, the factory director did not give his statement, as he requested and was granted a deadline of 11 May, citing his lawyer’s inability to appear.
After a lengthy process, the production manager was released under restrictive conditions, following a unanimous decision by the prosecutor and investigating judge.
The investigation focused on the circumstances that led to the explosion, as well as whether competent executives had knowledge of, or tolerated, the risk. The defendant’s lawyer, Mr Harmanis, argued that allegations of warnings about a leak or a strong smell of gas are unfounded, noting that his client worked in the area every day, where his relatives were also present.
The charges faced by those involved are felonies and include, among others, direct complicity in an intentional explosion, serial homicide by negligence and causing bodily harm.
On behalf of the victims’ families, lawyer Demosthenis Pantazopoulos said there are also indications of misconduct by state agencies, stressing that the case file must be completed in order to form a full picture of the case.
Another important element is the report by the National Technical University of Athens, according to which extensive corrosion was found in the propane transport pipes, with two large holes through which flammable gas had been leaking for a long period of time.
At the same time, the company’s owner remains in pre-trial detention, as his request for release was rejected. The competent judicial council is expected to review the matter in the near future.
