The call is open for signature by every part of the grassroots movement, including groups, collectives, organisations and assemblies, bodies and associations, unions and student groups.

The call reads:

‘On Saturday 16 May, we invite you to take to the streets for the victory of resistance and struggle, the victory of those from below and the victory of life. Aristotelis Chantzis, a resident and member of the Occupied Prosfygika Community, who has been on hunger strike to the death since 5 February 2026, will be on the 101st day of his hunger strike, with his life at critical risk from day to day and minute to minute, as well as the risk of serious permanent damage to vital organs. At the same time, the second hunger striker, Suzon Doppagne, has entered the struggle with a hunger strike to the death since 1 May and on 16 May will be on the 15th day.

‘The hunger strike to the death by our two comrades is being carried out in defence of the neighbourhood and the Occupied Prosfygika Community, the largest self-organised project of social housing, solidarity and the common good in Greece and Europe, its more than 400 residents, its structures, relationships, culture and the collective memory of this historic neighbourhood. The struggle is already in its final stage and will result either in the vindication of the just demands of the hunger strikers and the community, or in their death.

‘This is a struggle that concerns everyone, because of the burning issues that plague Greek society. These may be expressed intensely in the Prosfygika community, but they are common problems, socially connected to universal human needs. It is a struggle for the right to housing, the right to health, food, education and culture. A struggle for solidarity and the right to the city. Ultimately, it is a struggle in defence of life and dignity itself.

‘On this day, we do not wish to call for a mass mobilisation only for the two hunger strikers and the Occupied Prosfygika Community. Starting from there, we call on all of us to take to the streets over the common problems we face from a state and a regime that drive us into poverty. A state and a regime without any moral barrier and without scruples, which has led our societies into decline.

‘It is a regime that must be overthrown for us to live.

‘From this platform, we call on everyone: the organised forces and the world of struggle, but above all all those who have fought and continue to fight the great struggles of our times:

‘the structures and the movement of social self-organisation and solidarity, every liberated space and occupation, every collectivity and grassroots organisation;

‘the Tempi movement, the farmers’ movement, the movement of struggling parents, the anti-war and anti-imperialist movement;

‘the unions, associations and mass social organisations;

‘the labour movement and the fighters struggling for health, food, shelter, education and culture;

‘the anti-fascist movement, the anti-racist movement, refugees and migrants, and Roma communities.

‘We call on all of us to take to the streets en masse for the unification and reconstruction of our own world: the world of resistance, equality, freedom, justice and solidarity. For a mass and unifying descent into the streets in Athens and nationwide, with the clear declaration that our societies can and will win.

‘We call on people to gather on Saturday 16 May in Athens, at noon in Syntagma Square, and in every city nationwide and internationally, to declare with determination that our societies can and will defeat the politics of death, the plunder of our lives, the regime that leads us to impoverishment and the unjust memory of our dead. Our right to life and dignity will prevail.

‘Victory in the hunger strike of Aristotelis Chantzis since 5 February and Suzon Doppagne since 1 May.

‘Our societies can.

‘Either victory or victory.’
