In a statement, March to Gaza Greece said the rally was being held for ‘the two abductees of the Global Sumud Flotilla, whom the Israelis kidnapped, tortured and are now illegally trying’.

The call states:

‘Our two comrades, Saif Abu Keshek, a fighter of Palestinian origin, and Thiago Ávila, a Brazilian social and environmental activist, have been fighting for decades for the Palestinian cause and are the soul and body of the solidarity missions. Both activists were kidnapped and transferred to Israeli prisons after the attack on the flotilla on the evening of 29 April off Crete.

‘We condemn their abduction, which is part of the massive international piracy by the genocidal state of Israel and its occupying naval forces. This armed piracy was carried out with the co-operation of the Greek state and with the complicity of the US, Nato and their partners.

‘The attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla, like previous attacks on missions aimed at breaking the siege of Gaza, constitutes a clear act of international piracy, blatantly violating any concept of legality. This is not surprising, given the genocidal blockade of Gaza, the ongoing military occupation and aggression against Palestine, Lebanon and Iran, and the 18-year history of attempts to break the siege by sea.

‘We call for action across the country for their immediate release, as well as the release of all Palestinian prisoners:

‘Tuesday 5 May at 7pm at Syntagma Square.

‘The situation does not allow for waiting. We must act immediately.

‘Freedom for Saif, Thiago and all Palestinian prisoners, the hostages still held in Israeli torture centres and prisons.

‘Free Saif. Free Thiago.

‘Free all Palestinian political prisoners.

‘Free Palestine.’
