‘In this case, no evidence has emerged that would lead us to accept PASOK’s request or the joint request by SYRIZA and New Left. There is no evidence that would lead to a preliminary inquiry. Therefore, the response of the government majority will be negative,’ he said.
Marinakis argued that the relevant proposals submitted by the opposition were not based on evidence or even sufficient indications. He said the request submitted by SYRIZA and New Left itself acknowledged that the establishment of a preliminary inquiry committee does not require full evidentiary documentation, but rather the reporting of factual incidents.
He accused the opposition of attempting to instrumentalise the case for political purposes, describing it as ‘another attempt to use a case to build an agenda for a preliminary inquiry without evidence’. He added: ‘They are interested in turning politics into a vast courtroom, without real evidence and data.’
Marinakis also referred to the rhetoric used by opposition parties, describing it as excessive and irrational. Specifically, regarding PASOK’s claim about the existence of an illegal mechanism with the characteristics of a criminal organisation, he stressed that there was no evidence to confirm it.
At the same time, he recalled that the government had already accepted the referral of two former ministers, Kostas A Karamanlis and Christos Triantopoulos, to the Judicial Council. By contrast, in the cases of Makis Voridis and Lefteris Avgenakis, New Democracy did not consent to the establishment of a preliminary inquiry, citing the absence of evidence or indications.
Marinakis said Livanos and Arabatzi would respond and ‘will show with legal and political arguments why the attempt to involve them has no relation to reality’.
