According to reports, the drone was Ukrainian-made, most likely a MAGURA V3 model, similar to those used extensively in the war in Ukraine for reconnaissance missions and precision attacks against Russian targets in the Black Sea.

The incident began when fishermen spotted a black high-speed unmanned boat inside a cave, with its engine still running. They towed it to the port of Vasiliki, where it was taken over by the Hellenic Coast Guard.

An initial inspection found that it was not a conventional private drone but a sophisticated unmanned surface vessel (USV), equipped with high-tech sensors, antennas and communication systems pointing to military use.

The vessel was reportedly carrying explosives and three detonators, which were immediately deactivated. The specific type of USV carries contact detonators on the bow, activated by impact, while its operators can remotely activate or deactivate the payload via a satellite system.

The Armed Forces have taken over the investigation, while the National Intelligence Service (EYP) is also involved. The drone is expected to be transferred to Attica for further analysis.

Authorities are examining all possible scenarios, from the targeting of a Russian ship to a provocation or a possible connection with smuggling networks that have operated for years in the Adriatic and Ionian Seas.

Minister for Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis was cautious in his comments.

‘It was found by fishermen in the Ionian Sea, in a place where it was not visible. The Armed Forces are examining it. It is certainly not something accidental, it is serious, and the Armed Forces will provide answers,’ he said.

The deactivation of the explosives was crucial, as otherwise the possibility of an accident during towing could not have been ruled out.
