The largest increase was recorded in housing, at 13.8%, driven by rises in electricity prices (14%), natural gas (19.3%) and heating oil (53.2%). Transport followed, with a 10% increase, as diesel rose by 32.4%, petrol by 17.1% and other fuels by 42.4%. Food prices rose by 4.4%.
Significant increases were also recorded in clothing and footwear (2%), health (1.2%), hotels and restaurants (6.1%), and insurance services (3.5%). Telecommunications was the only category to record a fall, at 2.2%.
In food, the largest increases were recorded in beef (19.2%), lamb and goat (13.3%), margarine (11.6%), coffee (7.9%), fruit (7.5%) and vegetables (7.1%).
Among services, price rises were recorded in housing rents (7.6%), air transport (18.6%) and restaurants (6.5%).
On a monthly basis, from March to April 2026, the general index rose by 1.5%, compared with no change in the corresponding month of 2025. The largest monthly increases were recorded in natural gas (39.5%), heating oil (18.1%), air transport (15.9%), hotels (10.2%) and other fuels (8.6%). Lamb and goat, petrol, and pasta followed, rising by 5.7%, 5.7% and 4% respectively.
Harmonised inflation increased by 1.6% month on month, compared with 0.5% in April 2025.
