Kyriakos Mitsotakis has strongly emphasised the role of Greek thinkers in inspiring America’s founding fathers and has promised Trump a warm welcome. At a time when Trump’s relations with other European leaders, including Giorgia Meloni and Friedrich Merz, are deteriorating, the US president has praised Greece as ‘amazing’ and Mitsotakis as an ‘amazing guy’.

The report states that a Trump visit would be significant in communications terms, while Athens sees the US, with its base in Crete, as a security guarantor against Turkey and wants to undermine Trump’s relationship with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Greece is also betting on business deals, including ExxonMobil, a new port in Elefsina, and an agreement with Ukraine for US liquefied natural gas. At the same time, New Democracy is shifting ideologically to the right, with a hard line on immigration and an emphasis on Christianity, Greek culture and European identity.

Guilfoyle, a former lawyer and Fox News presenter, has sparked backlash by describing China’s ownership of the port of Piraeus as ‘unfortunate’. ‘Every day I wake up I’m going to find a way to advance American interests and counter Chinese interests,’ she has said. She claims to see Mitsotakis three to four times a week and to exchange texts and phone calls with him.

The Delphi Economic Forum has become a point of reference for MAGA figures, including Andrew Puzder, Michael Marafatsos, Veronica Brusevich, James Carafano, Paul Dance and Scott Atlas. Dance said this is ‘a harbinger of a battle between the US and China. You have to choose a side.’ Matthew Boyle of Breitbart stressed that Greece ‘has emerged as one of the US’s greatest allies in the second Trump term’.

The report notes that Mitsotakis’ close relationship with Kamala Harris was suddenly seen as a weak point after Trump’s election, and that the Greek conservative camp was quick to launch its own MAGA ‘attack’. Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has said he would vote for Trump ‘with both hands’, Migration Minister Thanos Plevris supported Trump’s victory on the basis of opposition to illegal immigration and the ‘woke agenda’, while Makis Voridis said that ‘whatever is right-wing is good’. Mitsotakis himself praised the raid in Caracas to arrest Nicolás Maduro and promised Trump that he would ‘have a great time’ in Greece.
