‘Three years after the shipwreck of 14 June, with more than 600 dead and missing refugees on a fishing boat that had been located and monitored for hours, the largest anti-refugee crime in the Mediterranean remains unpunished. Despite the indictment of 21 Coast Guard officers on serious charges, the New Democracy government is not simply covering it up – it is bragging about it,’ the party said in a statement.
In detail:
‘The crime has a name. It is the policies of Fortress Europe, the EU-Turkey deal and the Dublin Regulations, which trap refugees in the hands of their persecutors and turn the country into a vast concentration camp and gendarmerie.
‘It is the Mitsotakis government that implements these policies with zeal: Georgiadis, who “fights illegal immigration” in response to the UN; Voridis, who wonders in Parliament whether the time has come for the Coast Guard to sink boats; Plevris, who legalises the policy of pushbacks with the new Migration and Asylum Pact.
‘It is the same government that supports the US and Israeli wars in our region, which generate refugees and migration through the destruction and impoverishment they produce in societies subjected to imperialist interventions.’
