The debate will begin at 8pm Greek time and will last one hour, following a decision approved by 221 votes in favour and 213 against. The request for the extraordinary debate was submitted by the political groups of The Left and the Greens, following a letter from The Left vice-president and SYRIZA MEP Costas Arvanitis to the president of the European Parliament and the leaders of political groups within the democratic spectrum.
The discussion will focus on the ‘defence of European democracy and the integrity of the European Parliament’, following revelations that an MEP was targeted for illegal surveillance. The Kouloglou case has prompted strong reactions in Brussels, as the surveillance of an MEP who was participating in an inquiry into spyware is regarded as a blow to the democratic integrity of European institutions.
