Andreas Stoimenidis, president of the European Organisation for Safety and Health at Work, said that ‘the explosion occurred at the base of a tank containing alcohol, as the company was pasteurising vinegar, while the welding work was carried out by an unskilled worker’.
He added that ‘it is possible that he was not an employee of the company, but had been called in, assigned various jobs and paid a daily wage’.
Stoimenidis also said that four LPG tanks were located on the other side of the building from the alcohol tank where the explosion occurred.
‘Fortunately, the building stood between these tanks and the alcohol tank, and they did not explode,’ he said.
