Search operations in the waters south of Gavdos continued throughout the night without result following the capsizing of the refugee boat.
According to the 51 survivors, the boat had initially been carrying 77 people. All 51 people rescued are reported to be in good health, while one refugee was found dead.
Search efforts are now focused on locating the approximately 25 people still missing.
The operation is being coordinated by the Hellenic Coast Guard’s Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Centre.
According to the Coast Guard, four passing ships, two boats and a Frontex aircraft initially approached the area. A Coast Guard rescue vessel, another Frontex vessel, an Air Force helicopter and a Frontex drone are also taking part in the operation.
A Coast Guard helicopter is also operating in the area as part of the search for those missing.
The 51 survivors have been taken aboard the vessels participating in the operation and are safe. They are expected to be transferred to Crete, with Paleochora and Agia Galini designated as their destinations.
Northwesterly winds of up to 5 Beaufort are prevailing in the area, making conditions more difficult for rescue teams and search operations.
