Government minister Yannis Michelakis is working on an amendment to suspend financing to all parties facing criminal organization and terrorist charges. SYRIZA sources have said that there is ground for discussion as long as the motion secures a qualified majority 180 out of of 300 votes in parliament. Ahead of a vote on Thursday 17 October, Mr. Michelakis is making contacts with all parties so that there is a common vote against Golden Dawn.
Golden Dawn holds 18 seats in parliament. Three of its MPs are currently in jail on charges of heading and participating in a criminal organization. It would be a rare development if governing party New Democracy and main opposition SYRIZA agree on a compromise.
