In a story today, Landon Thomas Jr. of the New York Times is focusing on Greece's Central Banker, Giorgos Provopoulos and a prosecutor's report looking into him as possibly having played a role in a bank deal between Piraeus Bank and Lavrentis Lavrentiadis, a businessman currently under in prison pending trial over fraud and embezzlement charges.
The 2010 deal provided Piraeus Bank, Mr. Provopoulos's former employer, selling its 31 per cent stake of another bank, Proton, to Mr. Lavrentiadis. Proton Bank had to be bailed out by the Greek state and Mr Larentiadis was accused of using the bank to finance his own business activities.
