Concern deepens over the seismic activity in Cephalonia; a final deal for Greece is expected to be struck in the spring; the Greek state has long ignored potential European support for the unemployed; thousands of uninsured cancer patients have been abandoned by the state; and the German Vice Chancellor says Greece is an ‘African country’. Seismologists troubled by yesterday’s second 5.7 Richter earthquake
The seismic activity around Cephalonia is a source of deep concern for scientists. Yesterday’s strong 5.7 Richter earthquake appeared to confirm scenarios predicting the potential spread of the instability in the earthquake prone region, and now another even stronger earthquake along one of the regions faultlines is considered possible.
“It is the fourth faultline that has become active at this time, following the activation of the fault responsible for the earthquake on the 26th of January,” explains Thanasis Gkanas, head of research at the Institute of Geodynamics. “The plate is currently fracturing at different points and we cannot rule out the possibility of another part of it becoming unstable,” according to Maria Sachpazi, head of the Institute of Geodynamics. It is worth noting that the acceleration from the first earthquake was 0.5 Gs and from the second 0.6 Gs. In the meantime the Ministry of Defense’s “Defkalion” plan has been activated and specialized staff and equipment have already arrived on the island.

There is money but they refuse to ask for it!
Successive governments threw away the option of support for the unemployed
European Fund: Only one request from the Greek government for 2.9 million euros while Denmark has received 63.7 million
Wealthy European nations such as Germany and Denmark as well as countries hit by the crisis such as Ireland, Spain and Italy have receive tens of millions in aid from the European Globalization Adaptation Fund for the financial support of the unemployed while Greece, whose governments only submitted one application in… 7 years received only 2.9 million euros. The revelation over the indifference and incapacity of the relevant officials was brought to light by the Employment Commissioner Laszlo Andor in a written response to a question from SYRIZA MEP Nikos Chountis.

Uninsured cancer patients left to their fate
– “When they told me I saw everything turn white. A white sheet covered everything – my wife, my child, my dreams…”
– “An uninsured patient goes to the hospital, signs a piece of paper and leaves with 15,000 euros worth of debt which the Revenue Service will then demand.”
– “The situation is explosive. We are on the brink. Clinics are being merged or eliminated, there are staff shortages…”
“I’ve shouldered the cross and I’m walking up the hill.” Those are the words of George, 47, describing the cruel uphill battle being fought by thousands of uninsured cancer patients. Facing a merciless disease and a merciless state which deprives them of the ability to fight for their lives, they rush about on a daily basis in order to secure drugs and money for tests. Their only allies are the self-sacrificing doctors and National Health Service staff and a huge solidarity network with over 30 community clinics and pharmacies.

“Greece is an African country that should have never entered the euro.”
Sigmar Gabriel [Vice Chancellor of Germany and Social Democratic Party Chair] makes a provocative statement.
The Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister described Greece as an “issue more for the World Bank than the IMF,” according to the Die Welt newspaper, “given that there are no state structures.” He added that the country only gained entry to the eurozone by, “falsifying all of the data.”
