The former bank chief was arrested in Istanbul on the 10th of January after an international arrest warrant was issued for him over allegations that he participated in issuing hundreds of millions in unsecured loans from Hellenic Postbank in 2008-09. He denies the charges and claims that he was already planning to return to Greece to face prosecutors when he was arrested.
He claimed to the Turkish court considering a Greek extradition request that he was the subject of a politically motivated investigation in Greece due to his close business and personal relationship with Kostas Karamanlis. He said the charges against him were an attempt to hurt the former conservative Prime Minister.
According to reports the Turkish court ruled that the extradition request for Filippidis by Greek authorities was not legal but a second one has since been issued.
A total of 25 people have been charged with fraud and money laundering in connection with the Hellenic Postbank scandal, many of them well-known figures in Greece.
