TA NEA

“It’s was like something was trying to get out of the ground,”

With bruises on her, face an elderly woman from Lixouri in Kefalonia tries to smile. She is being sheltered together with tens of other fellow residents in the closed gymnasium of Lixouri. At the same time hundreds of families have turned their cars into homes. “It was like something was trying to get out of the ground,” some of those affected by the earthquake tell Ta Nea attempting to put into words the nightmare that they lived through. Ta Nea is chronicling how the daily lives of thousands of Kefalonia’s residents has been turned upside down.

Turbulence at SYRIZA HQ over regional governor candidate

Karipidis made controversial statements about Jews and Golden Dawn

SYRIZA’s selection of candidate for the position of Regional Governor of Western Macedonia is turning into a Gordian knot which the political secretariat, in the presence of Alexis Tsipras, is being called to untie. The choice of Theodoris Karipidis has provoked a number of serious protests from within and without the party as the well-known local journalist has a number of ‘irregularities’ on his resume. Athens: Agreement demanded over banks

The Hellenic Financial Stability Fund (HFSF) has accused the troika of delays over the completion of the stress tests.

The HFSF has sent a letter to the troika warning of the consequences of delays in the completion of the bank stress tests and the submission of draft legislation for the new round of recapitalisation.

The issue of the stress tests has proven to be one of the greatest sticking points in negotiations. The HFSF warns that the delay puts the increase in capital by Eurobank at risk in which, according to the letter, private investors are taking part.

Furthermore it prevents the HFSF from taking advantage of positive developments in capital markets in order to accelerate the privatization process of the banks. Finally it is noted that the fact that capital requirements have not been established prevents the finalisation of the bank restructuring plans.

Number of businesses unable to pay taxes triples

448,563 businesses had outstanding debts worth 40 billion euros at the end of 2013

In just one year, 2013, the number of businesses sacrificed on the altar of the current economic policies tripled as they were included in the list of businesses with outstanding debts to the tax office. This at a time when outstanding debts are not collected, tax evasion is rampant and increases in revenue are mainly due to the ‘charatsis’ [one-off levies] and asset seizures.

The dead-end at which the market finds itself for a sixth year in a row is causing a drop in consumption and revenue, the general lack of liquidity, business closures and skyrocketing unemployment as data from the Finance Ministry now confirms. According to data from the latter at the end of 2012 the 148,658 businesses owed outstanding taxes worth 35.4 billion euros. By December 2013 the number of legal entities unable to pay their taxes rose to 448,563 with total debts worth 40.4 billion euros. Total outstanding debts reach 64 billion euros.
