The special committee will consist of 19 members with each party represented proportionally to its representation in parliament. The request for the establishment of the committee was initially submitted by SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras and subsequently supported by SYRIZA MP and WWII resistance hero Manolis Glezos.

Last week in a meeting of party leaders it was unanimously decided that the establishment of the committee be put to a vote in a plenary session. Today the relevant motion was passed.

A recent report by the Legal Council of the State over the question of German war debts is in clearly need of supplementary work both in terms of technical and financial data as these were found to be insufficient, Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos said in a speech before parliament on Tuesday.

The minister made clear that pursuing the legal route proposed by the Legal Council’s report was not a solution that he would recommend for the country. He said that from the moment Greece raised the issue, Germany would deny that it had any obligation to act leading to an international dispute with little chance of any positive outcome.
