Municipality of Aristotelis: A Nonstop Party

“SOS Chalkidiki, this is only the beginning.” That is the response given by the residents of the town of Ierissos when asked about what the loss suffered by [incumbent mayor] Christos Pachtas means. Since Sunday night the residents of Chalkidiki have not stopped celebrating.

[Christos Pachtas was the mayor of the municipality of Aristotelis where the controversial goldmine of Skouries is located. He was an open supporter of the mining operation which is widely unpopular with the local community. The latter appears to have been proven on Sunday when the incumbent suffered a comprehensive defeat at the hands of the challenger Giannis Michos who opposes expansion of the mining operation, losing 46.4% to 51.5% which means there will be no second round election. The result is seen as a major victory of the anti-goldmine campaigners of the group ‘SOS Chalkidiki’.]
