A European Bombshell over waste management contract free-for-all

  • Funding is cut off for 11 regions
  • Regulations and Directives are violated by carbon-copy clauses inserted into contracts
  • Guaranteed amounts of waste are a gift to contractors
  • The ‘dirty secret’ of contractors, ministries and regional governors

14 Public Private Partnerships have been scuppered [Greek: SDIT] for waste management in Attica (Keratea, Grammatiko, Fylis, Ano Liosia) and another ten regions throughout the country originally planned for the next three years. Brussels, thanks to an initiative by the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament, is turning off the funding taps for the projects from the current and ‘new NSRF’ [European Structural Funds – Greek: ESPA] due to a host of violations of the rules of competition and European legislation for waste. The first target is the clause that guarantees the production of a certain tonnage of waste which is included as a carbon copy in all 14 projects, in the interest of the contractors.
