The second televised debate between former Prime Minister and head of Syriza Alexis Tsipras and New Democracy leader Vangelis Meimarakis will take place on Monday 14 of September, one week before the general elections.
After Wednesday's debate between the leaders of the seven major political parties in Greece analysts expect another confrontation with no significant political weight.
Alexis Tsipras has promised to fight corruption and has stressed that he will not cooperate with New Democracy but have not given any further details as to with whom he would form a government if his party does not win the necessary parliamentary seats.
Vangelis Meimarakis, has campaigned using the notion of political stability, experience in government and the inadequacy of Alexis Tsipras, as he claims. He has repeated that he would cooperate with anyone, including Syriza, to form a coalition government and establish national unity.
Opinion polls show an extremely marginal lead to Syriza which appears to be only 0.2% ahead of the second New Democracy.
Although it is difficult to make a safe prediction on the outcome of the elections, it seems that no political party will be able to govern without a coalition partner.
Whoever wins will have to deal with the implementation of new and harsh austerity measures that will probably make the new government unpopular.
