The agents, as well as 15 vessels will be deployed in accordance with the actions agreed in a new operation with the code name Poseidon which will be realized as an answer to the Greek request for aid in swift action in the country's external borders in the Aegean sea.
In a statement, Frontex noted that the number of officers will gradually increase to more than 400. The number of vessels, vehicles as well as technical equipment is also expected to expand in an effort to assist the Greek forces in managing the unprecedented influx of refugees into the country.
The large majority of those refugees who reached Europe in 2015 (more than 821.000 out of 1.000.000 people) came into the continent through Greece. Out of those, 816.000 came through sea.
According to the International Organization for Migration, almost 3.700 refugees, most of which were attempting to flee the war of Syria and other places, either lost their lives at sea or are considered missing. 700 of them lost their lives in the Aegean while 3.000 drowned while trying to reach Italy.
