In and around Athens, every building and area allocated to host refugees is full beyond capacity. There are more than 5500 people in those places.
In areas close to the borders, there are more than 7500 people. At the same time hundreds of people are walking towards the northern borders of Greece where they almost run into a virtual dead end as the borders of Fyrom have been closed today and there are only a few Syrian refugees allowed per day.
In cities around Greece, hundreds of people are also to be found. Some stay in closed gymnasia, others have had to sleep in the rough. Several hundreds are walking along the national highways trying to reach the northern borders of Greece and then, it is their hope, to pass through to central Europe.
Some thousands have also been stranded in the eastern islands of Greece, where they landed after leaving Turkey. The authorities have decided to have them stay in cruising ships docked at the islands rather than sail them to Athens until some progress is made.
