The president of the European Parliament, expressed the support of the EU as well as his own personal position for the negotiations which are taking place towards a solution for the Cypriot Issue
Martin Schulz who is on an official visit to Cyprus and met with President Anastasiadis. During his visit he stated that “the Cypriot Issue is one of the biggest problems that the European Union faces”. A solution to the issue, and the reunification of the island would “be a sign of hope for the European Union at a time of deep crisis on many levels”.
Mr. Schulz added that he visited Cyprus in order to get informed and understand and that now he comprehends the situation in a much better. He also added that in the recent times there is “unbelievable progress” in the talks about the Cypriot Issue and he assured that the European Parliament will aid in the search for a solution to the extent that it can.
On his behalf, the president of Cyprus stated that the help of the European Parliament is crucial in the efforts for a complete resolve of the Cypriot Issue. After the meeting with president Schulz he added that both men “agree that the Cypriot Issue is a European problem and its solution should align with the principles and values of the European union”.
On Turkey, Mr.Anastasiadis clarified that Cyprus is watching the progress of the process for its acceptance into the EU “a clear message has to be sent to Ankara, that the time has come for it to fulfill its obligations towards the European Union and the Cypriot Republic in order to reopen frozen chapters and(Turkey's) acceptance route.
