According to Bloomberg, citing an interview in France 24, Benoit Coeure said that another round of debt relief is necessary, even though there have been two such efforts so far.
Mr. Coeure said the Greek debt has been restructured twice before, already, also acknowledging the criticism placed on Europe for stalling these decisions. He also expressed his certainty that all pending matters will be arranged so that Greece will receive the next tranche on time.
The Executive Board member also insisted on the necessity of reforms so that Greece can return to growth, the sooner the better as he put it.
In fact, he commented that this way it could be possible that Greek economy will enter a positive trust spiral.
Regarding the Brexit referendum, ECB Executive Council member Benoit Coeure said the European Central Bank is prepared to help steady financial markets should Britons vote this month to leave the European Union.
“The ECB is prepared for all possibilities, as it always has been in this sort of situation, to stabilise markets especially by providing liquidity” Coeure said.
He added that he did not expect that to be necessary because of authorities' preparations for Brexit risks, but if it did happen “we would do what is necessary” in coordination with other central banks.
