A large rescue operation is currently underway to save approximately 200 migrants from a smuggling boat that issued a distress signal at the sea region southeast of Crete
Boats that had been sailing nearby assisted the smuggling vessel until Coast Guard boats were dispatched to help the migrants. The boat gave out the signal after foundering off the island's southeastern coast.
