The resolution also proposes that the Region and the Prosfygika community ‘take a step back and immediately proceed to an institutional dialogue with the participation of the Municipality, in order to find a commonly accepted solution’.

‘In these critical hours, our faction, Athens Now, and Open City put the protection of human life above all else,’ Doukas said.

According to Doukas, the Athens Now and Open City factions backed the resolution, which calls for the suspension of Chantzis’s hunger strike and the cessation of implementation of the Region’s contract.

His post in full:

‘In these critical hours, our faction, Athens Now, and Open City put the protection of human life above all else.

‘They approved a resolution calling for the suspension of Aristotelis Chantzis’s hunger strike and the cessation of implementation of the Region’s contract.

‘We call on the government and the Region to respond to our proposal and to immediately initiate a dialogue with the Prosfygika community, with the contribution of the Municipality of Athens, which has specific responsibilities in the matter, so as to put a definitive end to the tension.

‘We also ask the political parties to contribute through their interventions to finding a commonly accepted solution.’

According to the resolution, the Municipality of Athens has requested since 20 April, through a Municipal Council resolution, that the government and the Region take initiatives to open dialogue with the Prosfygika community, with the aim of finding a consensual solution.

The resolution states that the main goal is to restore the buildings with respect for their historicity, redevelop the area and ensure housing for the current residents, with provision for controlled movements within the neighbourhood.

The Municipal Council stresses that the need for a solution has now become imperative because of the critical health condition of hunger striker Aristotelis Chantzis.

The resolution expresses concern over the escalation of the situation, noting that there is a risk of tension spreading beyond the community, and calls on the authorities to avoid any form of violent intervention.

The Municipality of Athens calls on the government, the Region and the Prosfygika community to take a step back and immediately proceed to institutional dialogue with the participation of the Municipality, in order to find a commonly accepted solution. It notes that consultation must be based on European and international legality.

The full resolution follows:

‘The Municipality of Athens has requested since 20 April, by resolution of the Municipal Council, that the Region and the government undertake dialogue initiatives with the Prosfygika community.

‘The aim is to find consensual solutions for the restoration of the buildings, with respect for their historicity, the regeneration of the area and the provision of housing for their current residents.

‘Today, this necessity becomes imperative, as the life of hunger striker Aristotelis Chantzis is at a critical point. There must not be, in 2026, a death from hunger strike in the country.

‘There is no place here for denunciations, nor for petty party exploitation.

‘We unequivocally condemn the attack on the home of the governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias.

‘We stress that the situation has gone beyond the control of the community and is taking on the dimensions of a wider backlash, something that must be avoided at all costs.

‘There is no place for displays of force and, under no circumstances, for violent intervention by the authorities, which will find us opposed.

‘Hundreds of vulnerable people live in Prosfygika today and must be treated by the state with sensitivity and care, not suddenly left on the street. There is a technical way, and with a willingness to communicate, the regeneration can be carried out through controlled movements of residents within the neighbourhood.

‘The Municipality of Athens once again asks the government, the Region and the Prosfygika community to all take a step back and immediately proceed to dialogue in order to find a commonly accepted solution.

‘No intransigence is permissible in these critical hours.

‘We call for the Region to stop implementing the programme agreement and for the Prosfygika community to suspend the hunger strike.

‘We call on the government and the Region to respond to our proposal and to immediately initiate a dialogue with the Prosfygika community, with the contribution of the Municipality of Athens, which has specific responsibilities in the matter, so as to put a definitive end to the tension.

‘Consultation on the basis of European and international legality can ensure maximum social consensus.

‘We ask political parties to contribute through their interventions in this direction.’

The Athens Now and Open City factions voted in favour of the resolution. The factions Athens High and Our Athens, as well as independent councillors Dimos Giotis and Gianna Betty, voted against. The People’s Rally of Athens, Subversive Alliance for Athens and independent councillor Christos Tentomas abstained.
