Speaking on television, Tatsis accused the New Democracy government of being unable to present itself as an ‘observer’ at a time when, he said, it is actively participating in imperialist strategies. He also argued that these choices are supported by other parties, which, according to him, back military spending and international alliances.
The KKE official spoke of ‘two worlds’: on the one hand, large business and energy groups recording excess profits, and on the other, workers under pressure from high prices and the rising cost of living.
Turning to domestic politics, he also criticised the opposition parties, saying that PASOK and SYRIZA had supported key government choices in previous years, either through legislative initiatives or through political collaborations.
Tatsis stressed that, in the KKE’s view, a change of government is not enough, and that a comprehensive change of political direction is required. As he noted, ‘anti-popular policy’ cannot be overturned by the other parties within the political system.
Finally, he referred to the May Day protests, emphasising that they were a response by workers to the government’s choices and calling for social struggles to be strengthened against policies that, as he said, burden the popular majority.
