Former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou was today acquitted of felony charges of attempted breach of trust, under which he had faced a possible life sentence. He was found guily of tampering with a public document, but the charge was reduced to a misdemeanour. He received a one year prison sentence. The case was heard by a special court in Athens set up to deal with trials of politicians

Papconstantinou stood accused of removing the names of three of his relatives from a list of potential tax cheats that held the names of Greek depositors with accounts at a private Swiss branch of HSBC. The former minister claimed he was innocent, and that he had been made a scapegoat in the case. The former Greek government failed to investigate the names for over 2 years after receiving the list from the then French finance minister, Christine Lagarde.
