‘Are public hospitals provided with the possibility of women exercising their right to abortion? The answer is yes. Second question: in all hospitals? No, the answer is no,’ Georgiadis said.
The minister also appeared sceptical about whether a woman who turns to the National Health System would be able to proceed easily with the procedure.
‘If you ask me as a minister, do I feel that a woman who wants to have an abortion and seeks it through the National Health System will not be able to do it? I feel that she will eventually be able to do it. Perhaps with greater inconvenience, or kilometres of distance, yes, that can happen,’ he said.
He also compared a woman’s access to abortion with a cancer patient’s access to chemotherapy.
‘This could be the case for a cancer patient who is going to have chemotherapy, for a patient who wants to have a specific operation and so on. It is not just about abortion. We cannot provide everything everywhere,’ he added.
