It is the first time that authorities are granting permission to jailed Golden Dawn MPs to participate in a parliamentary process since they were jailed, awaiting trial on charges of running a criminal organisation.

According to reports, the prosecutor’s ruling was dictated by the high stakes of the presidential election, upon whose outcome rests the government’s fate.

The decision was also reportedly influenced by the possibility that a constitutional debate over their right to vote could have been triggered.

The extreme right MPs were recently barred from voting on the budget and the government’s confidence vote.

Party leader Nikos Michaloliakos and leading figures Christos Papas, Yiannis Lagos, Giorgos Germenis, Panayiotis Iliopoulos, Nikos Kouzilos and Ilias Kasidiaris are all expected to attend today's first round vote in parliament. They will be transferred from Korydallos prison to parliament.

Golden Dawn had announced the intention, a few days ago, of its MPs to vote down the government’s nominee for president, the former EU Commissioner for the Environment, Stavros Dimas.

The remaining Golden Dawn MPs that have been indicted but not jailed are also expected to participate.

The neo-nazi party won 18 seats in the 300-seat parliament in the 2012 national election. All 18 of them are facing felony charges
