Loukanikos, the stray dog that became famous for tagging along with protesters when riots broke out on the streets of Athens, has died, according to Avgi newspaper.

As one of hundreds of stray dogs in the capital, Loukanikos – which means sausage in Greek – became famous the world over after appearing in footage of countless riots that rocked Athens up until 2011.

He was at the front line when police fired tear gas and became a mascot of sorts of protesters for years, featuring in reports by the likes of the BBC and the Washington Post.

Loukanikos disappeared from Syntagma Square two years ago and spent his remaining life in the care of the man who had looked out for him over the years. According to a veterinarian’s report, he died in poor health at the age of 10, due to his prolonged exposure to chemicals and teargas at the riots.
