Speaking on SKAI’s Atairiastoi programme, Chrysochoidis said the issue requires special handling, as electric scooters, although environmentally friendly, create serious safety and traffic problems.
‘The first measure is a complete ban for minors,’ he said, adding: ‘If an electric scooter hits you today, who will compensate you? We need mandatory insurance for rentals as well.’
He also referred to the problem of scooters being abandoned on pavements, saying that ‘it must end’.
Chrysochoidis cited the example of a rider recorded travelling in the left-hand lane of Syngrou Avenue at 70km/h. ‘Think about it: if a car is travelling at 50km/h, it needs 15 metres to stop. Imagine how long an electric scooter needs,’ he said.
The new measures, he said, will proceed ‘very quickly’, while municipalities will also have a key role in regulating parking and possibly limiting the number of scooters available.
