In effect, MSF says, the bill intensifies the constant exposure to risk, harm and suffering for every person in need of international protection in Europe.

According to Doctors Without Borders, the bill’s provisions entrench practices involving extensive restrictions on rights and remedies, and shape the way Greece treats people seeking protection, including children, families, and survivors of war and violence.

‘European and national asylum policies must ensure the health, dignity and fundamental rights of people, and not obsessively reinforce deterrence measures that cause serious harm,’ said Doctors Without Borders humanitarian affairs adviser Christianna Mourouzi.

MSF denounces the accelerated asylum procedures that limit access to protection, as well as the excessive use of administrative and de facto detention, including for minors and other vulnerable people. At the same time, it underlines the need for an explicit ban on the detention of pregnant women and new mothers, while their medical examinations must continue after the initial screening process. Families of shipwreck victims must also be recognised as people with special reception needs.

For years, MSF teams on the Greek islands have dealt with the serious physical and psychological toll caused by these policies. Many patients remain undiagnosed for serious illnesses and receive delayed treatment. At the same time, prolonged confinement and uncertainty during the asylum process exacerbate depression, anxiety, trauma and suicidal ideation. Many people also report being pushed back. Poor living conditions and limited access to vital healthcare lead to outbreaks of infections and leave chronic diseases untreated.

Doctors Without Borders calls on members of the Greek Parliament to make the necessary amendments to the bill, with the aim of protecting the dignity, health and fundamental rights of people seeking protection.
