Plevris defends nationalist slogans by Hellenic Navy personnel at the Greek Independence Day parade

Thanos Plevris, the party spokesperson for the ruling party, New Democracy, stated that he was not bothered at all by the offensive nationalist slogans against Turkey heard from members of the Hellenic Navy during the 25 March parade commemorating Greek War of Independence. In fact, he supported them, saying, "These are the sailors I want, not those singing twinkle, twinkle, little star."
It’s worth noting that in a video circulating online, the parade participants can be heard chanting “Cyprus is Greek” as well as insults against Turkey. The parliamentary spokesperson commented on the unacceptable incident, saying:
“I have to tell you, I wasn’t bothered at all by that particular slogan.”
He went on to explain:
“In military services like those of the Navy non-commissioned officers, as part of their training—regardless of what the ministries say—these people are being prepared to die for their country tomorrow morning. So within this preparation, there are slogans. Obviously, these aren’t slogans a politician would say, nor are they slogans for times of peace.”
Plevris continued with more far-right rhetoric, saying, “The slogan ‘Cyprus is Greek’ is not linked to the Greek junta. The 13 combatants of EOKA fought for that slogan.”
Regarding the offensive slogans against Turkey, he added:
“As for the offensive slogan about Turkey, well, it’s 25 March, we can say a few extra words.”
The parliamentary spokesperson even praised the sailors, stating, “Tomorrow morning the Belharra frigates will arrive. These are the sailors I want to man the Belharras. Not those who sing ‘My Little Pony.’ If Turkey is upset on a day like 25 March, we’re not going to start crying over it.”
