Profits of 439% in 20 months from Greek bonds

Greek bonds led in profits during the first quarter, performing better than the bonds of other states as the positive climate for investment in the country improves on a daily basis. Greek bonds ‘rewarded’ investors with profits of 23% during the first quarter, the largest among the 34 sovereign debt markets that are tracked by Bloomberg Indexes.

The European Central Bank President Mario Draghi had committed in July of 2012 to offer support to the Eurozone by buying the sovereign bonds of over-indebted states. If investors had taken a position on Greek debt the day of Mr Draghi’s announcement they would have secured today, 20 months later, profits on the order of 439% according to calculations by Bloomberg. The performance of Greek 10-year bonds has fallen now to lower levels than the end of March 2010.
