Red alert over potential terrorist strike

Olympic Games level security measures are taken – Assistance provided by FBI and Scotland Yard

The Greek police are implementing security measures on par with those taken during the [2004] Olympic Games, reinforcing, under the fear of terrorist strikes, the protection of buildings, hotels and car convoys connected to Greece’s EU Presidency. Plans by Athens police headquarters include everything from patrols by armored police around the Zappeion Palace – where from today there is an irregular council of EU interior ministers – and the hotels occupied by European officials, to the stationing of secret police around the perimeter of the Acropolis. In addition security measures have been tightened around 320 protected targets throughout Attica. American and British security forces are participating in the efforts to prevent terrorist strikes and the manhunt by anti-terrorism police for [escaped terrorist] Xiros.

Farmakonisi like Lampedusa

The Council of Europe Human Rights Commissioner, Nils Muiznieks has harsh words for the government: “There is shock and dismay over the latest tragedy, which appears to have been the result of a failed mass expulsion.” Nobody believes the excuses of the shipping ministry. SYRIZA: It amounts to a cynical crime, the illegal practices of denying refugees entry to Greece’s territorial waters are to blame, the implementation of which the government boasted about to parliament. Today at 9.30am those rescued from the disaster will be received by a demonstration of solidarity in the port of Piraeus.

Icap data shows large losses

Businesses have accumulated losses worth 34 billion during the recession

The dark shadow cast by the recession on the economic activities of Greek businesses has been estimated to reach 34 billion euros, given that this was the level that the accumulated losses of 27,200 Greek companies reached in 2012. According to data gathered by Icap, the total losses of the above companies in 2012 reached a total of 5 billion euros, adding to already high levels of losses accumulated in previous years and particularly post-2008. In an attempt to record trends from 2007, a sample of comparable data for 15,130 companies shows a reduction in activity on the order of 7.3%, a reduction in tax revenue for the state of 2 billion and the accumulation of losses of 26.5 billion euros, when in 2007 the data showed an accumulation of profits worth 3.7 billion euros.

“November 17 was disbanded in 2002”

Dimitris Koufodinas [currently imprisoned for being a leading member of the terrorist organisation November 17th] has sent a message to whomever considers themselves a member of November 17. In a stark and categorical statement Koufodinas writes that November 17 has disbanded and nobody has the right to use its name and its history let alone declare themselves its continuer. [The message was clearly directed at escaped 17N member Christodoulos Xiros who recently resurfaced, uploading an internet video and written manifesto to the internet which he signed, ‘Christodoulos Xiros, Free Member of November 17’].
