The strongest tremor was recorded at 1.02pm and had a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale, with an epicentre near Prokopi in Evia and a focal depth of approximately 5km, according to the Geodynamic Institute. A few minutes earlier, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake had occurred in the same area.
According to local authorities, no injuries have been reported so far. However, damage has been recorded to homes in Prokopi and Dafnousa, as well as landslides at various points on the road network.
The mayor of Mantoudi-Limni-Agia Anna, Giorgos Tsapourniotis, said that the municipality’s services are on alert, while crews are carrying out inspections to assess the damage. Civil Protection and Fire Brigade teams were also immediately mobilised, carrying out patrols and interventions in areas where rockfalls and debris were reported.
The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection is in constant communication with local authorities to record the impact of the earthquake and coordinate the necessary actions.
Seismologists are monitoring the development of the aftershock sequence, while authorities are calling on residents to follow civil protection instructions and avoid remaining in damaged buildings until the relevant inspections have been completed.
