teachers to get 660 euros
Oh those pampered Greeks! Monthly salary of newly hired teachers to fall to 660 euros, down from 1020 in June 2011. Ethnos
"The law introducing uniform salaries to the public sector is a guillotine for the salaries of public sector employees, reducing salaries by 50 up to 1500 euros a month" writes Ethnos daily. "Teachers will be especially hard hit, with newly hired teachers΄ salaries down to a mere 660 euros a month, from 1020 a month in June 2011. This will lead 200.000 primary and secondary school teachers to the threshhold of starvation. "Teachers, already the worst payed civil servants, watch in terror as their salaries are turned into tips" says the teacher΄s union, pointing out that the meager 660 euros a month will be the salary of a newly hired teacher only if he or she has some sort of previous teaching experience. Otherwise, it will be 575. This comes on top of cutbacks introduced during the past two years of austerity, which scrapped Christmas, easter and holiday bonuses, and despite the fact that prices and taxes have increased dramatically.
