Attendance at today’s hearing was not large, but the presence of repressive forces was particularly heavy.

The trial had been postponed for approximately 30 days because the courtroom was wholly unsuitable to accommodate all the lawyers, relatives and supporters, despite the fact that this is a critical case of public interest.

Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis had claimed that it was the ‘best courtroom in Europe’, ‘fully renovated’ and ‘decorated’.

There had been strong reactions from victims’ relatives and lawyers during the opening session on 23 March. To add more seats to the room, plasterboard was initially removed in order to merge the foyer area with the main courtroom.

Works on the room began after 28 April and were completed just a few days before the start of today’s session.
