The message of the Greek elections, as seen by analyst George Delastik.

“Germans and other Europeans should understand that economic strangulation of the Greeks is no longer a workable policy choice. They ought to immediately direct funds to the Greek economy, rather than planning deeper cuts in salaries and pensions.

The Greek economy is in free fall. Without direct financial support from the EU and the Greek state, without bank loans to businesses, tens of thousands of Greek companies will go bust in the next few months. If the Europeans refuse to fund and prefer to blackmail the next transitional government, political developments in our country could well get a violent turn, one that would reverberate across Europe.

The message of the Greek elections is absolutely clear. The EU can no longer hope for submissive Greek governments such as the one led by George Papandreou. Berlin must modify its approach if it does not wish to witness an insurrection that would rapidly spread to other European countries.

Technically, Germans and other Europeans may have well built a firewall around their banking systems, to ward off any risks stemming from a Greek collapse. But they are unable to grasp the incendiary effects a social upheaval in Greece would have on their own societies.

Let s hope they will never need to find out. But if Germany does not adjust its policies, soon the entire eurozone could be on fire.”
